Class K extinguisher + hood suppression system

These are separate systems and they do different jobs. The commercial kitchen hood fire suppression system is an installed automatic system designed to protect the hood, duct, plenum, and cooking appliances according to its listed design. A Class K extinguisher is portable equipment intended for manual use on applicable commercial cooking fires.

Because restaurants often need service for both, we can inspect the portable extinguishers during the same visit as a semiannual kitchen suppression-system service when practical.

When a Class K extinguisher needs attention

Call for service if the extinguisher has been used, the seal is broken, the unit appears damaged, service is overdue, the restaurant changed ownership and records are unclear, or a fire inspector identified a deficiency. We inspect the actual unit and determine whether annual service, additional maintenance, recharge, testing, or replacement is appropriate.
