Kitchen Suppression

How Often Does a Restaurant Hood Fire Suppression System Need Inspection?

Most commercial kitchen suppression systems need inspection and certification every six months. Here is what that involves and why staying current matters.

How Often Does a Restaurant Hood Fire Suppression System Need Inspection?

If you run a commercial kitchen, your hood fire suppression system is the most important piece of fire protection equipment in your building. Like any safety system, it only works if it is maintained — and that means regular inspection and certification by a licensed technician.

Most commercial kitchen fire suppression systems require inspection and certification every six months. This semi-annual schedule is the standard across the industry and helps ensure that every part of the system — nozzles, fusible links, link lines, cables, agent cylinders, and the gas valve shut-off — is in place, undamaged, and ready to perform. It applies to the common wet-chemical systems found in restaurants, including Ansul R-102 systems. For service on an existing Ansul system, see our Ansul fire suppression system service page, and our Ansul system guide explains how those systems work.

What happens during an inspection?

During a routine inspection, a technician checks that nozzles are clear, aligned, and aimed at the correct appliances. Fusible links and link lines are inspected for wear and replaced if they are out of service life. Control cables are tested for proper operation. The agent cylinder is verified as charged and in date. The gas valve shut-off is tested to confirm it functions correctly. Piping and fittings are checked for security and damage.

If everything passes, the system is certified and tagged with a documented record. If the inspection reveals a deficiency — a worn fusible link, a damaged cable, a low cylinder, or a misaligned nozzle — the technician explains what is needed and can often perform the repair during the same visit.

Why staying current matters

A lapsed inspection can lead to more than a citation. If a system is not inspected and a fire occurs, the consequences can be serious — for your kitchen, your staff, and your insurance coverage. Staying current with semi-annual inspections keeps your system reliable and your documentation ready for fire department or insurance review, and it supports overall restaurant fire code compliance.
